How to Read Backflow Test Results at Home

A city testing notice can make a backflow report feel more urgent than it is. Once you know how to read backflow test results, the form becomes straightforward: it identifies your device, shows whether its protective parts operated correctly, and documents whether the required certification can be submitted.

For most homeowners, the most useful line on the report is not a technical pressure number. It is the final status: passed, failed, repaired and passed, or unable to test. The numbers provide the certified tester and municipality with supporting evidence, while the status tells you what needs to happen next.

Start With the Device and Property Information

The top portion of a backflow test report confirms that the right device was tested at the right property. Check the service address, account number if listed, date of test, and the device location. A device may be described as serving an irrigation system, pool fill line, commercial water system, fire line, or another connection.

You should also see the assembly manufacturer, model, size, and serial number. These details matter because the municipality maintains a record of the specific backflow prevention assembly installed on your water service. If the serial number or location does not match your equipment, bring it up before paperwork is submitted. A simple data-entry error can create confusion when the next annual notice arrives.

The report should identify the assembly type as well. Common types include a reduced pressure principle assembly, often called an RP or RPZ; a double check valve assembly, or DCVA; and a pressure vacuum breaker, or PVB. The type determines which internal components are tested and what passing criteria apply.

How to Read Backflow Test Results Line by Line

Backflow test forms are not always laid out the same way, but most contain the same categories: shutoff valve condition, check valve readings, relief valve or air-inlet operation where applicable, final status, and tester certification information.

A pressure reading is typically recorded in pounds per square inch, shown as psi. It measures the pressure difference across a component while the tester performs a controlled procedure. That difference is what helps confirm the component can stop water from moving backward toward the public water supply.

A higher number is not automatically "better," and a number that looks small is not automatically a problem. Each assembly type, manufacturer specification, and applicable testing procedure has its own acceptable criteria. The tester evaluates the reading against those requirements, not against a general rule of thumb found on another report.

Check valve readings

Check valves are internal one-way valves. On a double check assembly, the report commonly lists Check Valve No. 1 and Check Valve No. 2. On an RP assembly, it will generally do the same. The reported differential pressure shows whether each check held properly during the test.

If a check valve does not hold, the report may show a low reading, a zero reading, or a notation such as "failed to hold." A failed check can result from debris, a worn rubber component, a damaged spring, or ordinary aging. It does not necessarily mean the whole device needs replacement.

Relief valve readings on RP assemblies

An RP assembly includes two check valves and a relief valve between them. The relief valve is a key safety feature because it is designed to discharge water rather than allow a potentially contaminated condition to push back toward the drinking-water supply.

On an RP report, you may see a reading for the first check, a relief valve opening point, and the second check. The relationship between those readings matters. The relief valve must operate within the acceptable range for that assembly and testing standard. If it opens too early, too late, will not open, or discharges when it should remain closed, the assembly may fail.

It is normal for an RP relief valve to release some water during testing. That controlled discharge is part of confirming that the valve functions as designed. It is different from seeing the device continuously leak after the tester has completed the procedure.

Air-inlet operation on PVB assemblies

A pressure vacuum breaker protects against backsiphonage, which can happen when pressure in the water supply drops and draws water backward. Its test section may refer to an air inlet or vacuum breaker. The tester verifies that the air inlet opens and closes as required and that the check valve performs correctly.

PVBs are common on irrigation systems and are often installed above ground. Because they are exposed to weather and winterization work, damaged fittings, frozen parts, or leaking valves may be visible before a test begins. The report separates the condition of the tested device from any surrounding plumbing issues that may also need attention.

Find the Final Test Status

Look for a clearly marked result near the bottom or in a designated status box. A passing result means the assembly met the required operational criteria at the time of testing. It does not mean the device will never need service, but it does mean the tester can certify it for the current testing cycle.

A failed result means one or more required components did not meet the standard. The report should identify the failed component or include notes explaining the issue. Common notes include a check valve that did not hold, a relief valve that opened outside its acceptable range, leaking test cocks, inaccessible equipment, or shutoff valves that would not close.

An "unable to test" result is different from a mechanical failure. The device may be buried, blocked by landscaping, located behind a locked gate, shut off, frozen, damaged, or missing required access. In that case, the property owner usually needs to correct the access or installation issue before a valid test can be completed.

What a Failed Reading Usually Means

A failed backflow test is a repair decision, not a reason to panic. Many failures are caused by replaceable internal parts, such as check discs, poppets, springs, seals, or relief valve components. A certified tester can determine whether repair is practical after inspecting the assembly and confirming available parts.

The cost and next step depend on the type of device, its age, the condition of shutoff valves and fittings, and whether the assembly is still supported by the manufacturer. A small repair can often be completed during the initial visit. For larger repairs or replacement work, the customer should receive a clear explanation and approval request before work moves forward.

Replacement may make more sense when a device is badly corroded, repeatedly fails, has damaged body components, or uses discontinued repair parts. If you no longer use the irrigation system or other connection served by the device, code-compliant removal and capping may be another option. This can stop future testing obligations, but only when the connected system is properly removed from the potable water supply.

Check the Tester Certification and Submission Details

A completed report should include the tester's name, certification number, signature or electronic certification, and the test date. These details show the test was performed by a qualified professional and provide the municipality with the documentation needed for compliance.

Also confirm how the report will be submitted. Some cities and townships accept electronic filing directly from the testing company, while others have a specific portal or form process. Direct submission removes a common problem: a homeowner assumes the test is complete, but the municipality never receives the record before the deadline.

Keep a copy of the report for your property files, especially if your system has been repaired, replaced, or removed. It can be useful when a new notice arrives, when selling the property, or when resolving a question about device history.

Make the Next Test Easier

Before an appointment, make sure the tester can reach the assembly. Clear mulch, stored items, and landscaping away from the device; unlock gates if needed; and make sure the water is on unless you have been instructed otherwise. If the device is indoors, provide access to the mechanical room or utility area.

For irrigation assemblies, avoid scheduling testing while the system is actively running. If you have a pool, sump pump connection, or a commercial installation with unusual operating hours, mention that when scheduling. A little preparation helps keep the visit quick and prevents an avoidable unable-to-test result.

Your report is more than a piece of compliance paperwork. It is a record that the barrier between your property's water connections and the public supply was checked, documented, and handled before a small issue had the chance to become a larger one.
